Welcome to Issue 9 of Bus Buzz, the quarterly newsletter from the public transport team at the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS) in The University of Sydney Business School. Long Term Master Plan

The much awaited Draft Long Term Master Plan for NSW has now been published and has been subject to much commentary. ITLS Professor David Hensher has commented on ABC News Radio and ABC 702 Sydney.

Land Value Capture and the Liverpool to Parramatta Transitway

Professor Mulley had been investigating the way in which the transitway, opened in 2003, has increased land values of residential properties. The first of a number of papers 'Accessibility and residual land value uplift: identifying spatial variations in the accessibility impacts of a bus transitway' (Densmore and Mulley) is available as an ITLS Working Paper.

Multiple purposes at single destination: A key to a better understanding of the relationship between tour complexity and mode choice

A better understanding of the trips that residents make is key to policies to increase public transport mode share. An ITLS Working paper by Chinh Ho and Corinne Mulley looks at public transport tours from the Bureau of Transport Statistics Household Travel Survey.

Professor Stephen Ison, Visiting professor from Loughborough University UK

Professor Stephen Ison visited ITLS for one month. He gave a seminar on Road pricing and workplace parking charges: the issue of implementation and has been working with the public transport team on parking policies, ground access to airports and travel plans.

ITLS will be welcoming Professor Roger Mackett from University College London at the end of October

Professor Roger Mackett will be giving a seminar on 'Concessionary bus travel: Liberation for older people or burden for the taxpayer?' on 30th October at 11.00am.

Renaud Bayle, our visiting interne from ENTEPE, France, has returned home

A report 'Identifying the performance parameters of importance in the design of Bus Rapid Transit: an experimental framework using microscopic simulation' (Bayle, R, Mulley, C and Tirachini, A) is available at the Bus Rapid Transit Centre of Excellence.

Welcome to Patrick Tsai as a Senior Research Analyst in Public Transport

Patrick will be joining the ITLS public transport team in December. He is finishing his PhD which is a longitudinal study investigating linkages between public transport demand elasticities and land use characteristics.

Conferences in September

Professor Mulley and Dr Geoffrey Clifton both presented at the Urban Transport Planning Summit held at the Parkroyal Darling Harbour on 18th and 19th September. Professor Mulley presented on 'Understanding how commuters use transport in order to deliver the best planning strategies for the future network' (click here for the slides) and Dr Clifton presented on 'How to provide a bus service that passengers want' (click here for the slides).

The public transport team at ITLS (Professors David Hensher and Corinne Mulley, Dr Geoffrey Clifton, Patrick (Chi-Hong) Tsai and Chinh Ho) will be presenting papers on their research at the 35th Australasian Transport Research Forum (ATRF) in Perth on 26-28th September 2012. More information.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT EDUCATION

Summer School: Public Transport Policy and Planning

Enrol by 7 December 2011 for the subject Public Transport Policy and Planning in Summer School over 7 days in January-February 2012 at ITLS. Summer School provides an opportunity for external students to undertake ITLS units of study outside of a degree program. For more information click here.

One day course on public transport network planning on 15 February 2013

Understanding Public Transport Planning for Communities in Sydney is a one day short course that will outline principles, guidelines and the trade-offs for planning public transport in NSW. It is aimed at both public transport professionals and people who work with transport professionals such as local governments and community organisations.

OTHER NEWS

New bus contracts for Sydney and Melbourne

Tenders for the first four Sydney Metropolitan bus contract regions closed on 27 August 2012. The regions are in the Northern and Western suburbs covering around 690 buses serving 17.5 million passengers per annum. The next four contracts will be put out to tender in mid 2013. More information.

A short list of five companies tendering for a Melbourne Metropolitan bus contract was released on 24 August 2012. The contract mostly covers services in the East of Melbourne and cross regional 'SmartBus Orbital' routes with around 500 buses travelling 32 million kilometres per annum. More information.

New Double Deck Bus on trial in Sydney

Busways has launched a trial service of an Australian built Double Deck bus on route T75 between Blacktown and Rouse Hill. This follows on from the trial by Forest Coach Lines in 2011. More information.
